Lesson 4: Tone rules

Thai spelling tells you the tone exactly. You need three facts about a syllable:

  1. The class of the first consonant (middle / high / low — Lesson 2)
  2. Whether the syllable is live or dead
  3. Which tone mark, if any, is written above it

Live vs. dead syllables

  • Live syllables end in a long vowel or in m, n, ng, -i, -w. e.g. มา maa, กิน kin
  • Dead syllables end in a short vowel or in -k, -t, -p. e.g. จะ jà, ปาก pàak

The tone marks

Mark Name
่ ไม้เอก mái èek
้ ไม้โท mái thoo
๊ ไม้ตรี mái trii (middle class only)
๋ ไม้จัตวา mái jàt-ta-waa (middle class only)

The tone chart

Class Live, no mark Dead, no mark ่ ้ ๊ ๋
Middle mid low low falling high rising
High rising low low falling — —
Low mid short vowel: high
long vowel: falling
falling high — —

Notice that low-class consonants “shift up”: the same mark gives a tone one step higher than for the other classes. That’s why ไม่ (low class + ่) is falling, but ไก่ (middle class + ่) is low.

Worked examples

Leading ห (silent h)

A silent ห in front of a low-class sonorant (ง ญ น ม ย ร ล ว) makes it behave like high class:

มา maa (come, mid) → หมา mǎa (dog, rising)
